NATO raises the stakes

The recent NATO summit with the participation of US President Joe Biden brought disappointing news for Russia.

Moscow was not just accused of aggressive and irresponsible nuclear rhetoric. Russia is directly called a threat to NATO. That is, From now on, NATO is officially positioning itself as an enemy of Russia, while, how China is designated by a vague term “call”.

Let's try to figure it out, what exactly upset Moscow greatly?

Firstly, Alliance, designating Ukraine and Georgia as countries, desirable for membership, openly and even pointedly ignored President Putin’s statement about “red lines”, rejecting Moscow’s claims to determine the bloc status of the post-Soviet republics that are so important to it. So that the Moscow addressee of this message does not have the slightest doubt, President Biden stated directly, that the Donbass problem is not an obstacle to Ukraine’s accession to NATO. That is, The alliance abandons its, the previously unshakable principle of not admitting countries with territorial problems. NATO goes East, not intending to take into account the opinion of the Kremlin.

Secondly, Alliance showed, that he is able to learn the lessons taught to him, refusing to consider its functions exclusively in line with classical war. Now, Article 5 of the NATO Treaty introduces a response clause to “hybrid actions”. On appearance “polite people” without identification marks in countries under the auspices of NATO a tough military response will be given. The same applies to dangerous cyber attacks.. Certainly, hardly, after the next one “pranks” from Beijing or Moscow in cyberspace, Alliance countries will use military force, but they may well organize a retaliatory cyberstrike in the style of Israel, regular “hacking” Iranian nuclear program. This game, turns out, you can play together.

Well, and the third fly in the ointment for Russia, does not have a peace treaty with Japan, became NATO's intention to begin accession negotiations with Tokyo. That against the backdrop of the Japanese refusal of a moratorium on the creation of their own powerful army, does not add optimism to Moscow, nor Beijing.

Let's briefly summarize. Great power claims of China and Russia, endless samples “on weak” led to the mobilization of the Alliance, which is the first time since “cold war” rolled up his sleeves, and began to raise the stakes in the geopolitical game. How will his opponents respond??

NATO today is not about the threat of the hot phase of war, and about hybrid confrontation and redistribution of spheres of influence. Ukraine’s entry into this bloc will leave no chance of returning it to the orbit of Russian political influence. The situation is exactly the same with Georgia., and with other neighbors, which no matter how much you feed, and they are looking more and more closely to the West.
